Morgann Trumbull Projects is proud to announce Colby Claycomb’s Bottle Shop, a solo pop-up presentation of limited edition ceramics by San Francisco based artist Colby Claycomb. The exhibition will be on view for two days, from November 21 to November 22, 2025. The exhibition will coincide with the final days of Morgann Trumbull Projects’ San José pop-up. A closing party and artist reception will be held on Saturday, November 22 from 2:00 to 5:00pm.
In Colby Claycomb’s Bottle Shop, a selection of recent limited edition, cast ceramic vessels will be on view and available for purchase. Each vessel, while cast from the artist’s mold of a commercially available bottle, can, or receptacle, exists as an interpretation rather than impersonation of its ubiquitous source material. Instead of replicating the original vessel, Claycomb embraces the rough edges, inconsistencies, and evidence of his hand, allowing these works to be inseparable from his process of making. They serve as documents, and therefore biographical notes, of the artist’s life.
Each vessel, while cast from a mold, has a unique glazed surface that showcases a range of finishes and textures. While some are playful and hint at his roots in the UC Davis Funk Art movement, others are refined or somber, reflections of the artist’s contemplative and critical gaze. As in his large-scale installation works, Claycomb’s characteristic duality of levity and interrogation is ever present in this body of vessels.
Colby Claycomb, a sculptor who primarily works with found objects, ceramics, and construction materials, was born in Citrus Heights, CA in 1979. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Davis, in 2006. Later that year, he was selected and received a grant to attend a post-baccalaureate program at Pont-Aven School of Painting and Sculpture in Pont-Aven, France. He received his Master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2009 and was then selected and received a grant to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Artist Residency program in 2009. Claycomb lived and worked in New York City from 2010 to 2019. He then returned to the Bay Area in 2019. Most recently, he was a SECA Award Nominee in 2022 and 2024. He has exhibited his work extensively in the Bay Area and New York. Claycomb lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
Colby Claycomb’s Bottle Shop will be on view at 445 S First Street, San José, CA 95113 from November 21 to November 22, 2025. The gallery will be open from 12:00 to 5:00pm, and by appointment.
